How much is a coin worth: valuing a coin
"What's it worth?" is every collector's main question. A coin's price comes from several factors, and face value has almost nothing to do with it. Let's break down what actually drives value.
1. Mintage = rarity
The biggest factor. The fewer coins minted, the more valuable they are. A mintage of 5,000 is a rarity collectors compete for; a mintage of 1,000,000 is an ordinary coin worth its face value. Every NBU coin's mintage is listed in the catalog.
- Under 5,000 — high rarity; the price can be dozens of times the face value.
- 5,000–25,000 — elevated demand.
- 25,000–100,000 — moderate rarity.
- Over 100,000 — usually close to face value (special cases aside).
2. Metal
Silver and gold coins have a price floor — the metal's own value (melt value = weight × fineness × spot price). Even the most ordinary silver coin won't sell below its silver content. Nickel-silver (cupronickel) coins are valued only by rarity and demand.
3. Condition (grade)
The same coin in perfect condition (Proof, UNC) versus worn (VF, F) can differ several-fold in price. Proof and BU factory finishes are the priciest; a circulated coin with scratches is worth far less.
4. Demand and real sales
The catalog price is a reference; the real value is what a coin actually sells for. Popular series (armed forces, historical figures) sell higher than filler issues. The most accurate way to know a price is to look at completed sales and active listings.
